about

This song was written for my best friend Emily. Emily tragically died in 2011 while studying abroad. Her death has caused me to reflect a great deal on the meaning of love and friendships.

I think that far more than middle school crushes or high school hookups, our childhood best friends are the test case for romantic partnerships in adulthood. They teach us about long-term commitment, conflict resolution, and unconditional love. I've tried to encapsulate all of those feelings in this song.

lyrics

Emily I’d turn mountains into valleys
If it would bring you home
And I’d sell all of my possessions
Just to know you weren’t alone
But I can’t go where you’ve gone

We were both born in the summertime of 1991
In the same old Appalachian town
Known for nothing and no one
Our mommas knew each other way back when
Though I wouldn’t say that they were friends so
How could they ever really know

That Emily I’d turn mountains into valleys
If it would bring you home
And I’d sell all of my possessions
Just to know you weren’t alone
But I can’t go where you’ve gone

I know it wasn’t always roses
Sometimes love can feel like hate
But I’d take each slight a thousand times
For a second away from all this pain
And that angry year it slowly passed
Them sullen stares between our classes
I don’t know if you ever really cared

Oh Emily I’d turn mountains into valleys
If it would bring you home
And I’d sell all of my possessions
Just to know you weren’t alone
But I can’t go where you’ve gone

And I can’t go back to that memory
I go crazy thinking of you far away from me

So Instead I like to picture you
Out at surfer’s paradise
Waist-deep in the water with the sun
Reflecting in those blue eyes
And I can’t say every way we’ve changed
Since the day you went away
I just know it’ll never be the same

Oh Emily I’d turn mountains into valleys
If it would bring you home
And I’d sell all of my possessions
Just to know you weren’t alone
But I can’t go... Oh Emily

Oh Emily I’d turn mountains into valleys
If it would bring you home
And I’d sell all of my possessions
Just to know you weren’t alone
But I can’t go where you’ve gone
